After 5 years in Software Engineering(3 before postgrad and 2 after), I want to gain expertise in the business side of the equation. After an MBA, I plan to join a consulting firm to gain exposure to diverse business challenges and strategies. In the long term, I plan to expand the operations of our family business in software products.

I am currently targetting the US east cost schools in Top 15.
I have a Master's degree from one of the top engineering colleges in India with a CGPA of 3.76.

Awesome results and great that you have a strong CGPA as well as a great score - I think as long as you are not fumbling anything, you will get admits.
Scholarships will be a bit of a question. Have you joined Forte (not sure how much it is of value) but I have seen some Scholarship options/etc. but not sure if the time has passed already for those.

Either way good luck - hopefully you won't need it 😇

Strong profile by the way! The Expat, staying in the same industry, strong experience, and women-power.
FYI - Some schools have started accepting updated scores - just saw the policy from Haas for example so taking the GMAT again may help make you more competitive, esp if you can hit the average for the schools and not be dragging their average down with your score as they would likely like to take you.

P.S. Include some of client-facing, leadership, and presentation examples if you can in your applications.

I got my bachelor's degree (computer science) at Sharif University in Iran (the most prestigious one in engineering ) and also have 1 year of work experience as a consulter in the healthcare industry.

I also participate in an Executive MBA course ( 1 year long and the best one in Iran). I also have a great understanding and decent programming skills in ML and data analysis concerning my major.

Post-MBA Short-Term Goals: After my MBA, I plan to join a top consulting firm, focusing on strategy and innovation for startups and high-growth companies. This will help me develop a diverse skill set and gain exposure to various industries, while working closely with emerging businesses.

Post-MBA Long-Term Goals: Long-term, I aim to transition into a leadership role within a high-growth startup or launch my own venture. I want to apply the insights gained from consulting to drive innovation, particularly in tech or sustainability, and build a company that scales successfully while making a positive impact.

Region Targeted: I’m targeting dynamic startup ecosystems, such as Silicon Valley, New York, and London, but I’m also open to opportunities in emerging markets.

Hi. Just to clarify, if you only have one year of work experience, it’s going to be considered not enough by most programs or virtually all of them.

There is usually a requirement for a minimum of two years and most programs are looking for people with about 3 to 8 years of work experience. Having said that, if you were working or doing a startup during college, that can count and also there’s a number of programs that can defer you such as Stanford.

You have an amazing profile and I do not want to discourage you but as also someone who was fairly young when they got there NBA, you will get more out of it once you get some managerial experience and leadership experience.

You can absolutely get a masters degree and maybe that’s what you’re applying for at these universities so forgive me if I am working up the wrong tree and you’re going after a masters.

645 is not going to look good with 3.02.
How did you arrive at 3.02 by the way? Is that a converted score or did you go to a US/EU School? (you don't need to convert the GPA if it is not from a US or a 4.0 system)
User avatar
06 Sep 2024, 04:18
Besides the call-out by bb on GMAT and GPA, do revisit your school selection. Haas, Ross barely send ~15% into Finance (am including IB herein). Since you are aiming for R2, you have time to improve your GMAT to 705+ (which may sound high, but that's how you could offset the weak GPA). Also consider pursuing HBS Core (it's expensive) and MBA Math.

Given your GPA of 3.02, retaking the GMAT to achieve a higher score is crucial. A stronger GMAT score can help offset your GPA and demonstrate your academic potential. Good luck

Hey BigFoo,

Vashi here from LilacBuds.

You need to rework on GMAT to convert your target schools. GPA is low & a 695+ score will help you offset that.
You have good work ex, so just make sure that your application essays reflect your strong professional experience. ISB can be tried at this score ( there is a reasonable shot for R1)

We at LilacBuds would love to assist you by connecting you to alums/ mentors of top B-schools and would therefore request more details about your profile. You can connect with our team for a detailed profile analysis at https://lilacbuds.com/services/mba-cour ... mpaign=GCV or leave a message on +91-84483 35484 for a direct reachout.
You can also share your CV on vashi.gupta@lilacbuds.com .

Hoping to hear from you.

Hi BigFoo
I am Priyanka, Client Manager at ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, like everyone has already mentioned, a 645 FE will not go hand in hand with your GPA. Atleast a 695 or above would be needed to compensate. Having 6+ years of experience is a strong aspect for your application. Consider highlighting major achievements during work, talk about statistics! Your Post MBA goals slightly look a bit generic, consider speaking about it in more detail. Talk about what specific skills are you looking at from an MBA and how those skills align with helping you achieve your goals. I can see that you are applying to a few schools in R1 and others in R2, this looks like a good strategy. Build a strong narrative and you might get in.

Hi SB1230
I am Priyanka, Client Manager at ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, your GMAT score and GPA are strong. With 6 years of experience with more than a couple promotions and international exposure you should have a strong narrative to build around. Your LORs look good too. I see that you have been shortlisted for interview at Oxford, good luck for that.

Thank you! That’s a fantastic profile. Very strong chances for the EU schools.

M7 is a bit more unpredictable unfortunately.

PS. if your employer is offering to sponsor you, that will also help with admissions even if you do not want to return but they are offering to sponsor you.... Just FYI
User avatar
10 Sep 2024, 11:23
Thank you for the feedback. Fingers crossed.
Unfortunately I don't have any sponsorship agreement with my employer.
I'm planning to apply in the 2nd round to other schools, In case I don't get accept to the ones above. Do you have any recommendations? I assume I should go for schools that have consistently placed students in consulting (MBB,...), right?
User avatar
10 Sep 2024, 11:36
Hi. there’s actually really good recruiting among top 15 schools with placements into consulting. Harvard and Stanford for example are not known as great consulting schools. They still place a decent number, but usually people don’t go to Harvard to pursue consulting. You can go to Fuqua or Ross or Darden, or especially Tuck and Yale were consulting is bread and butter and is the daily laser focus of the program.

A good comparison could be buying a sports car which is really really good but not necessary if you are just driving to work.

I would recommend expanding your options to include a few lower ranked schools as you make consider the scholarship options they may offer. For example all T15 US programs are more competitive than Oxford for example.
User avatar
10 Sep 2024, 12:24
Thanks, that’s clear. Will consider these schools in the 2nd round.
Oxford is attractive for it’s 1 year program...
User avatar
10 Sep 2024, 12:26
Got ya. a lot of the consulting recruiting in the US is built around the summer internship. You do the summer intern internship in the consulting company and most of the time you’re set because you get the return offer... that is the US model. There’s still recruiting even without the internship as people change their mind and some people don’t get return offers but the rule is internship —> offer and a 2-year program.
User avatar
10 Sep 2024, 12:33
I see. Any idea if that applies for the Middle East too? Let’s say, someone wants to work in an MBB in Dubai.
Also if there is a choice between Insead or LBS and Yale. What do you think should be the differentiator factors? Target location post MBA?
User avatar
10 Sep 2024, 12:33
I think European schools are better for Dubai recruiting and networking as most folks from the U.S. schools stay here or at least try to after graduation.
User avatar

Varied experiences and lots of initiatives taken in undergrad at BITS Pilani. Pretty poor GPA unfortunately due to personal reasons and focusing more on some part-time work I was doing. Got a fulfilling internship at IIM-B. Worked part-time as CMO for an early-stage social media app. I have worked full-time for 4 years in a global Data and AI consultancy firm, with the last one and a half in a managerial position. I want to take the next step and work in strategy consulting, ideally at the crossroads of sustainability and technology as those are two areas I have worked on academically and professionally since my undergrad. Ideally, targeting the US/Europe regions for the short term with the eventual plan to move back to India to work with the government think tanks like NITI Aayog

I think brief and clear optional essay talking about your GPA will handle most concerns taken into consideration your level of engagement and your test score.

if you’re looking at consulting, any reason you skipped INSEAD? no international experience?

How was your garden interview by the way?

Thanks for the response! Yep, no actual physical international presence just virtual. I did have a 2-week stint and an international conference that I was sponsored to attend, but a tiny little thing called COVID ruined those plans...

I have it scheduled for tomorrow (EA option). Browsing the forums for last-minute tips!

Good luck tomorrow 🤞👍
as you are saying you want to recruiting to consulting as your post MBA goal, you want to address the concern that that admissions may have about your potential employability and reality of this goal. Can you be engaging, can you be presenting yourself well in front of a client and would you well on the consulting interview?

This doesn’t mean you need to blow their socks off or do something amazing but you need to be thinking on your feet, not get easily stressed out and appear confident and certain in your plans and ideas. There is a debrief experience someone posted from a few days ago (would appreciate if you can share your experience as well as much as you’re comfortable sharing n the chat/forum).
